Eyal Press, writer of “Absolute Convictions: My Father, a City and the Conflict That Divided America,” in the New York Times Magazine on Sunday examined the controversy surrounding Roe v. Wade — the 1973 Supreme Court case that effectively outlawed state abortion bans. According to Press, abortion has been “pushed” into “an increasingly marginalized corner of the medical world.” He writes that overturning Roe “will not end the abortion conflict” but will probably make the controversy change from one national “battle” into 50 state battles. “Many people believe that Roe is more likely to be chipped away at over the next several years than overturned,” Press writes, adding, “Whether they are right will rest in the hands of a Supreme Court seemingly more skeptical about abortion than any in recent history” (Press, New York Times Magazine, 1/22).
